Sunrise Ashfall Trilogy Mike Mullin Books

Sunrise was a pretty great ending to this action packed and horrifying series. It's exactly what I was hoping Ashen Winter would be. It stars off the very next morning, and things do not turn out how Alex expected. It looks like his time in Warren is over, so he and his family pack up and start a new homestead. This is what I wanted to read about! Rebuilding society and how governments were breaking down. It is pretty slow in the beginning, and some parts in the middle, but overall I really interested in most of it.

Some pretty messed up stuff happens in Sunrise. This series definitely hasn't been sunshine and rainbows (literally) to begin with, but somehow things manage to get worse before they get better. I don't want to spoil anything, but wow, Alex and Darla pay a huge price for some supplies that they need for their new society. There's also more violence and death and despair than the previous two books, but this one also spans over two years. A lot can happen in a post apocalyptic world in that time.

It was really fascinating to read about all of the structures they were building. If there's ever a disaster, I'd want Darla and Uncle Paul with me! Those two can build anything! It was also nice to watch it go from one family to a whole town, complete with a crude form of government. Naturally, Alex ends up being voted as mayor, which was both a blessing and a curse. He has amazing ideas for how their town should be run, but he also felt trapped by all of the responsibility.

There were two plot points that I really didn't like in Sunrise. The first was everything to do with Alex's mom. She's awful and annoying and inconsiderate, and none of this made any sense. She's super hard on Darla, and continually forbids Alex from planning a future with her. She should know that she has no say in these things! Plus, she becomes a huge liability and the reason Alex has to found a new town in the first place! I just wish there had been a more solid reason behind her horrendous behavior. The second thread was Alyssa's secret admirer. Someone is leaving her gifts, she thinks it's Alex, but no one has a clue who. It's revealed at the end, and was kind of cute, but to me it didn't add anything.

Sunrise is a solid ending to this trilogy. It has all of the components that I wished for in the previous books, and it wasn't as slow and repetitive which was a plus. There was a super adorable scene near the end involving Ben and some flowers, and just aaaw! My emotions! I got a bit teary eyed at that.

Sunrise Ashfall Trilogy Mike Mullin Books Reviews

Book number three of a three book series. Young adult post apocalyptic series about the Yellowstone super volcano erupting. This particular book is set twelve months after the eruption. The book format is trade paperback, my favorite. This is not a POD book.

There is 2 to 3 ft of volcanic ash in Iowa and Illinois. Now after twelve months of forced volcanic winter, there is another 2 to 4 ft of ice and snow on top of the ash. Everyone is starving and the cannibals are everywhere. So, our hero and his girl start building more greenhouses heated by wind turbines using water heaters so they can grow more kale and wheat for their small community.

One should prepare in a very general nature for this and other types of events. History tells us that non-interesting times are limited in scope and tend to change quickly and violently. A very minimum set of things to do is
1. three months of water storage for each person in the house
2. three months of food storage for each person in the house
3. some sort of protection against crazy people, I prefer guns and ammo
4. there are many other things that you can do to prepare for natural disasters, traumatic life events, national wars, civil wars, etc
Sunrise is the third book in Mike Mullin's engaging Ashfall trilogy.

One of the things I really like about Mullin's writing is that he keeps the pace moving but is always filling in details so that the reader is kept immersed in the world of Ashfall and sees and feels the things the characters are experiencing, like we see in this section where Alex and Darla are venturing into a deserted town near Chicago in search of supplies

"The final pair of scouts -- Nylce and Francine -- had followed East Avenue to a commercial district on the south side of town. When they returned, they were grim and ashen-faced. I could hardly believe what they told me. Instead of talking about it longer -- which I couldn't bear to do -- I asked them to take me there.
-- We went as a party of six -- me, Nylce, Francine, Ed, Darla, and another survivor of the Warren massacre., Trig Boling. He was a lanky nineteen-year-old with a slightly misshapen face, like it had been frozen while he was scowling in a particularly energetic way. But despite his appearance, Trig was unfailing friendly and cheerful -- I liked having him around.
-- We only had three guns, but everyone was carrying at least one knife. We stalked through the city in silcned, dreading our destination. After about ten minutes we passed the Freeport City Cemetery -- only a few of its tallest monuments protruded above the snow., lonely sentinels standing watch over a buried age.
-- Most of the buildings on West Avenue had burned. The first two shopping centers we passed had collapsed. As we approached the third, I noticed that Francine was caressing the handle of her knife, rubbing it as if it were a knotted muscle. Nylce's head flicked constantly from side to side as if she were afraid someone would sneak up on her in the few seconds since her last sidelong glance.
-- As we approached the Meadowlands Shopping Center, I saw a glint of firelight through the glass storefront of a J.C. Penney. We slowed our approach, using the snow-covered mounds hiding parked cars as cover. When we got close enough to see inside the Penney's, I realized that if anything my scouts had understated the horror of the scene.
-- Three men dressed in ragged, bloodstained clothing crouched in front of a greasy fire. Around them were scattered thousands of burnt and cracked bones. Behind them, the grisly bone pile nearly reached the high ceiling. I could identify femurs, ribs, hip bonds, and skulls -- all of the fragmentary, roasted and cracked for their marrow.
-- All the bones were human.

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys an engaging, well-written YA novel about two teens trying to survive in a world made harshly dystopic by natural disaster.
