This book is great for anyone interested in the suffrage movement, historical murder mysteries, and strong women themes. The main character, Dr. Dody McCleland, is England's first female coroner in the early 1900s. Her character demonstrates the struggles women went through with education and then the problems of being taken seriously/being respected after getting that education. Her sister is associated with the militant suffrage movement. When a suffrage march goes wrong a friend of her sister's is killed, and she is involved in solving the crime.

The suffrage theme is a main character in the book. You meet women in their suffrage meetings talking about women's rights and issues, planning to do "mischief," trying to set off a bomb, being force-fed in prison because they were on a hunger strike. Several times there are characters or situations that demonstrate the problems women had, such as divorce law, child custody, equal pay. You realize how much some of these suffragists went through to gain us the rights we have today.

I liked the characters and their interaction with each other. Good character development. Very interesting historical points.
I was expecting more - this is one to check out of the library and read. I was hoping to have it be close to the Lady Darby series, but fell short.
The time period is captivating but the characters are wooden and very hard to enjoy. They are so strident in their views it becomes almost suffocating.
Great historical details, winning characters and an interesting plot make this a winner in the historical mystery market. I enjoyed Dody's journey in the male-dominated field of medicine - and being an autopsy ME would be even tougher - and she faces rough choices. Chief Inspector Pike has flaws and his own interesting past, which increases reader sympathy. Here's to hoping book 2 is as strong as the first.
The General outline and background of the story is factual. The characters are so well developed and evolve through the story as does their relationship.Dody is I intelligent educated and has a sense of humor.
I love reading a good historical mystery showing history from different perspectives versus the sanitized version often taught in school. The women's movement in the early 20th century is fascinating and the author does a great job.
Not bad for a debut book at all. Dr. Dody McLeland is one of the first female anatomists in London and the story kicks off with her returning home after being gone for a year studying for and training in her craft. The author notes at the end that she fudged the history by a decade as the first records of female anatomists in England don't occur until 1820. That suits me fine because I'm primarily looking to be entertained - as opposed to getting a completely accurate history lesson - and this book delivered on that front.

At times this felt like more of a story about the early days of the suffragist movement in London than a mystery but it helped to foster a feeling for the political climate of the times. The pacing was sometimes uneven but that's not uncommon for first books, when characters and the world have to be established. The mystery aspect was okay and touched on some of the brutality and corruption in the police forces of the time. There were the usual red herrings tossed in and I can admit that I didn't start to figure out who the murderer was until the main protagonists started to do the same.

The author did deliver some interesting characters in both Dody and Chief Inspector Pike. I actually think Pike is the more interesting given his sad personal history. Dody herself is more middle of the road, not too extreme in her thinking but not a wall flower either. I could have done without her penchant for smoking a pipe since, being a non-smoker, I don't find the habit appealing in any way. I did enjoy reading about Dody's and Pike's interactions. They regard each other with a certain respectful wariness in the beginning and it's always fun to see those dynamics start to shift. There is no overt romance here but there are seeds that may bloom with time.

All in all, this was a quick read and I liked enough about it to continue with book two.
